West Ham United are reportedly considering a loan deal for Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson as recruitment director Nils Koppen continues his efforts to strengthen Nuno Espírito Santo’s squad ahead of the new season.
Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth revealed the Hammers’ interest after Arsenal’s pre-season clash with Borussia Dortmund, where Nelson remained an unused substitute.
Sheth reported that West Ham are interested in Nelson and are currently looking into the possibility and conditions of a loan transfer. The 26-year-old is also entering the final year of his Arsenal contract, potentially making his situation one to watch closely.
West Ham have been linked with Nelson on previous occasions, although those approaches never resulted in a completed transfer. With the winger now entering the final 12 months of his deal, however, the Hammers could have another opportunity to bring him to the London Stadium.
Nelson Could Provide the Squad Depth West Ham Need
Nelson could potentially prove to be a useful back-up option for Jarrod Bowen, particularly given West Ham’s need for greater depth in wide attacking areas.
The club are also expected to complete a deal for Manor Solomon, and bringing in another winger would underline a clear intention to build a deeper and more balanced squad rather than simply focusing on the strongest starting XI.
Nelson has arguably occupied an awkward position between the Premier League and Championship during his career. While he has struggled to establish himself as a regular standout performer in the top flight, his ability and experience could make him a valuable squad player, particularly when given regular opportunities.
That is exactly the type of option West Ham currently appear to need.
Their recent 3-1 Carabao Cup victory over Portsmouth exposed some of the squad’s depth issues. Mohamadou Kanté was required to operate in a left-sided midfield position, while Kaiber Lamadrid’s injury has further limited Nuno’s options for players capable of providing pace, width and directness.
Koppen Appears to Be Prioritising Experience
There also seems to be a noticeable trend developing around Koppen’s recent recruitment targets.
With 34-year-old Joel Veltman, 27-year-old Solomon and now Nelson among the players being considered, West Ham appear increasingly focused on adding players with experience and a strong understanding of English football.
Nelson may not represent the headline signing of the summer, but a loan move could still prove highly beneficial.
If he can provide competition and cover for Bowen while offering Nuno another quick and direct attacking option, bringing Nelson to West Ham could be a sensible piece of squad building.
