The Argentine defender is widely expected to leave Tottenham during the summer window, with several top clubs circling. Inter Milan, Atlético Madrid, and north London rivals Arsenal are all reportedly keen on signing the centre-back.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal’s interest in the Spurs captain is genuine, as Romero continues to weigh up his future options.
Ambrose: “Let them have him”
Given William Saliba’s injury during France’s World Cup semifinal clash with Spain, it’s no surprise Mikel Arteta is looking to strengthen his defensive line. The Frenchman is expected to miss the first half of the season, leaving Arsenal in need of cover—a void Romero could easily fill.
Speaking on The Sports Bar alongside Majestic, Ambrose didn’t hold back. He urged Tottenham to green-light a move to the Emirates, suggesting it might actually work in Spurs’ favour—while also casting doubt on Romero’s consistency.
“Let them have him… liability. Give Micky van de Ven the captaincy.”
Ambrose went on to acknowledge the financial side of any potential deal:
“Surely they wouldn’t, he’s got a contract until 2029 so he won’t be cheap. It’s different to the Sol Campbell situation. If they want him they have to pay big money to get him and then we’ll be laughing when he loses them every couple of games with a red card.”
Fans echo Ambrose’s stance
Ambrose isn’t alone in his thinking. A large portion of the Tottenham fanbase has also voiced support for selling Romero to their fiercest rivals.
Many supporters argue that rather than strengthening Arsenal, Romero would prove to be an unpredictable liability, potentially costing them in crucial matches.
Still, while Arsenal remain in the picture, it’s Atlético Madrid who are currently pushing hardest to secure Romero’s signature—though Inter Milan are also firmly in the race.
