In the aftermath, Argentine supporter Gisela Sanchez launched a petition on Change.org calling on FIFA to replay the World Cup final. By Friday morning, the petition had gathered more than 95,700 signatures, with supporters claiming Slovakian referee Slavko Vincic and his officiating team made several key decisions that influenced the outcome.
Sanchez argued that FIFA should investigate what she described as controversial officiating and alleged irregularities during the match, insisting the issue goes beyond Argentina and concerns “the future of world football.”
Despite the growing number of signatures, the chances of the final being replayed remain virtually non-existent. Petitions on platforms such as Change.org have no legal authority over FIFA competitions, and dissatisfaction with refereeing decisions is not grounds for overturning a World Cup result.
Football’s governing bodies only consider replays in highly exceptional situations, typically involving serious breaches of the laws of the game or administrative errors. As a result, even if the petition attracts hundreds of thousands of supporters, it will have no binding impact on the outcome of the World Cup final.
