However, the former England star has reportedly refused to retreat from his comments. Sources close to him claim he is “completely baffled” by Souness’s demand and has no intention of offering either a public or private apology.

The row has divided the football punditry world. Gary Lineker urged both men to cool tensions, while Roy Keane appeared to side with Souness, delivering his typically direct verdict.
