Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored a dramatic winner in stoppage time to give Leeds United a 1-0 victory over Brighton at Elland Road. In their last home game of the season, Leeds delivered a perfect farewell to their fans, with Calvert-Lewin’s late strike sending the crowd home overjoyed.
Goalkeeper Karl Darlow played a key role in the win as well, making a stunning save in the first half that even Peter Schmeichel would have struggled to believe. There was a worrying moment after the break when Anton Stach was carried off on a stretcher following a leg injury.
Calvert-Lewin’s 14th Premier League goal of the season restored the positive atmosphere, and Roy Keane was full of praise for both the striker and Leeds’ decision to bring him in.
Roy Keane full of admiration for Calvert-Lewin
The forward capitalised on a poor back pass from a Brighton defender and kept his composure to score the winner in injury time. Keane admitted the defending was dreadful and that the Brighton goalkeeper made things worse by rushing off his line too early.
Still, he credited Calvert-Lewin for doing exactly what a striker should do—converting the chance—and called him an excellent signing for Leeds.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Keane said: “Yeah, listen, it’s poor defending and decision-making, and I’m not sure what the goalkeeper is doing either. Credit to Leeds, they stuck at it, they have good spirit, and they never gave up.
It was their first shot on target, but look, Calvert-Lewin does what all good strikers do and chases a lost cause, and he gets his reward. I think Brighton will be kicking themselves.
It’s a moment that will cost Brighton dearly, but huge credit to Leeds. What a signing he has been, Calvert-Lewin on a free. A brilliant signing who could not have done any more for Leeds.”
Leeds aiming higher
The win lifted Leeds to 13th place with one match remaining, and they could still finish even higher. West Ham face a battle for survival on the final day, meaning Leeds might relegate the Hammers in London.
A win for Leeds could also see them climb as high as 11th, depending on other results. Few would have predicted Leeds pushing for a top-half finish so soon after winning promotion back to the Premier League last season.
