BREAKING: Tottenham handed instant referee explanation after VAR penalty controversy vs Leeds
In Monday’s Premier League clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, referee Jarred Gillett awarded Leeds United a penalty in the second half after Mathys Tel fouled Ethan Ampadu.
Tel had given Spurs the lead earlier in the half, but his momentum turned when he caught Ampadu inside the box, allowing Leeds a chance to equalize from the spot.
The incident unfolded as Tel attempted an acrobatic clearance. Ampadu beat him to the ball with a header, and Tel’s boot made contact with the Leeds player, sending him to the ground. Gillett initially waved play on, but after a VAR review and consulting the pitch-side monitor, the Australian official changed his mind and pointed to the penalty spot.
Explaining his decision to the stadium and TV audience, Gillett said: “After review, Tottenham No. 11 commits a foul on the Leeds attacker. The final decision is a penalty kick.”
Former Arsenal and Leicester striker Alan Smith, providing co-commentary for Sky Sports, shared his thoughts: “Tel didn’t know Ampadu was there, but he definitely catches him.
That kind of kick is always dangerous inside your own box. It’s a recklessly high boot from Tel—hard to argue with. He had time to adjust his body instead of going for an overhead kick. He didn’t need to do it.”
