A recent caller to talkSPORT, a Tottenham Hotspur fan named Mark, boldly claimed his team will avoid relegation following West Ham’s latest defeat.
His confidence left co-host Jason Cundy stunned, sparking a heated exchange with fellow presenter and former Spurs player Jamie O’Hara over Tottenham’s survival prospects.
Spurs hold a game in hand against Aston Villa on Sunday evening—live on talkSPORT—and a win would lift them to 17th place.
After West Ham’s loss, Mark phoned the GameDay Phone-In to explain why he believes Tottenham are safe. “We’ll be fine now, we’ll be fine,” he said. “West Ham are going to get three more points maximum.
They might beat Leeds, but they’ll lose the other two. So we need to win two games between now and the end of the season.” He added, “I think we’ll get over the line. I saw West Ham fans all week saying they’d win today.”
Cundy interrupted, urging Spurs fans to hold their fire until after the Villa match. “If I was a Spurs fan, I’d put the phone down and stay quiet until 9pm tomorrow night. I’d crawl back under that rock and stay very quiet. I wouldn’t be phoning talkSPORT, baiting West Ham fans just because they lost—and they weren’t even bad today.”
He continued, “I’ve yet to see a Spurs performance where I think, ‘They’ve got a chance of staying up.’ Not one. You’ve got no shame, Spurs fans—giving it the big one, ‘Yeah, we’re staying up!’ Honestly, shameless!”
O’Hara pushed back: “Don’t put words in my mouth. We’ve got a lot of work to do.” But Cundy doubled down: “Unbelievable! Just be humble, be silent, and wait until 9pm tomorrow.”
O’Hara stressed that not all Spurs fans are celebrating yet, with Villa posing a major test. “We know we have to do the business tomorrow against Aston Villa. And if we don’t? Well, there are still two points left. So it’s all to play for. Don’t say we’re all giving it the big one—we know the situation.”
As Cundy kept ranting, O’Hara shouted, “Shut up!” Cundy retorted: “Arsenal have scored as many goals today as you’ve had wins since October 26!”
West Ham and Spurs – The run-in
If Aston Villa take even a point from Spurs on Sunday, West Ham fans will breathe a huge sigh of relief.
The Hammers next host title-chasing Arsenal, then travel to Newcastle United, before facing Leeds United on the final day (May 24). Tottenham, meanwhile, host Everton on the last day—by which time the relegation battle may still be unresolved.
