Rutter’s late strike extends Tottenham’s woes
Tottenham Hotspur remained trapped in the Premier League’s relegation zone after a dramatic 2-2 draw against Brighton in Roberto De Zerbi’s first home match in charge. A stoppage-time equalizer from Brighton substitute Georginio Rutter stunned Spurs, who had looked poised to end their 15-game winless run in the top flight.

The home side thought they had secured all three points when Xavi Simons netted a breathtaking goal in the 77th minute, sending N17 into raptures. Simons’ brilliant strike came after he had set up Pedro Porro’s 39th-minute opener, which was later canceled out by Kaoru Mitoma deep into first-half stoppage time.

But joy turned to heartbreak in the fifth minute of added time when Kevin Danso gave the ball away cheaply, allowing Rutter to curl home an equalizer and force a share of the spoils.

The result denied De Zerbi his first win as Brighton boss and kept Tottenham in the bottom three for another week. With only five matches remaining, Spurs are fighting to avoid their first relegation since 1977.

Reflecting on another disappointing result for his former club, Michael Dawson told Sky Sports: “You have to look at the positives, but this will feel like a defeat. When you take the lead twice at home—especially given Spurs’ situation with no wins in 15—I thought going 2-1 up was their chance to turn things around, escape the bottom three, leapfrog West Ham, and put the pressure on.

“But then one lapse from Danso, switching off at the very end… as a centre-half, you clear your lines and do everything to secure the win. This will feel like two massive points dropped.”

Smith blown away by “unstoppable” Simons
For Simons, there was little else he could have done. According to Smith during the commentary, the Dutchman was “Tottenham’s best player” on the day and looked more devastated than anyone at the final whistle.

After witnessing what many assumed would be the match-winner from Simons, the commentator was full of praise: “He’s just delivered a worldie! That’s unstoppable. It’s majestic from Simons.”

Having already assisted Porro’s opening goal, Simons appeared to save his finest moment for the second half, curling a stunning effort in off the post.

Although Brighton’s late equalizer quickly grabbed the headlines, Simons produced the kind of performance that North London fans had been hoping for since his arrival last summer.

As Tottenham battle to climb out of the relegation zone with five games left to play, the former RB Leipzig man is sure to play a vital role.
