Premier League issue official statement following Newcastle United incident v Bournemouth

Newcastle United’s William Osula netted his sixth goal of the season during their match against Bournemouth at St James’ Park.

The young striker has now scored in two consecutive games for the Magpies, leveling the score on Saturday afternoon. After Marcus Tavernier put Bournemouth ahead in the first half, Osula responded with a well-taken finish—showcasing clever movement and footwork inside the box to slot home and make it 1-1.

The assistant referee initially raised the offside flag, as Osula appeared to be in an offside position when the pass came in. The ball was first thought to have been played by Bruno Guimarães, but a VAR review revealed that Bournemouth’s Evanilson had actually played it, leading to the goal being awarded.

The Premier League’s Match Centre explained the decision in a short statement: “68’ VAR OVERTURN – After review, the referee overturned the original offside decision against Osula.

Referee announcement: ‘After review, there is clear evidence that Bournemouth number 9 plays the ball forward. Final decision is goal.’”

Newcastle’s joy was short-lived, however, as Adrien Truffert put Bournemouth back in front late on. That goal looked set to hand Newcastle a fourth straight defeat across all competitions, just before a tough trip to league leaders Arsenal.
