BAD NEWS:- Premier League star in tears as agonising injury forces him off in Tottenham vs Brighton
Diego Gomez was visibly distraught as he left the pitch in tears during Brighton & Hove Albion’s Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur, after picking up what appeared to be a serious injury. The Paraguayan midfielder landed awkwardly following an aerial challenge and showed clear signs of distress, likely fearing a major setback just before the World Cup.
The 23-year-old’s left leg buckled beneath him as he jumped highest near the halfway line, with teammate Danny Welbeck quickly rushing over to offer support. After receiving assistance from Brighton’s medical staff, Gomez limped off in visible pain. Kaoru Mitoma came on to replace him in the 20th minute.
Alan Smith, commentating on Sky Sports, remarked: “It’s clearly a genuine injury, and you feel for him, but perhaps the stoppage won’t disrupt Brighton too much. Mitoma’s introduction shouldn’t affect their shape.”
On BBC Radio 5 Live, former Spurs player Andy Reid added: “Gomez has been in great form. You hope it’s not too serious, but the distress on his face—it doesn’t look good.”
Mitoma went on to equalize for Brighton just before half-time, after Pedro Porro had given Tottenham the lead. The substitute fired a first-time volley past goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, helping to soften the blow for Brighton—though that will offer little comfort to Gomez or Paraguay less than two months before the World Cup.
Gomez scored his third international goal—a winner—against Greece during the last international break and played the full 90 minutes in their other March friendly against Morocco. He has started all six of Paraguay’s matches since they qualified for the World Cup last September, earning 23 caps. He also scored in a 2-2 draw with Japan.
For Brighton, Gomez has ten goal contributions this season across all competitions, recently scoring in consecutive Premier League matches against Brentford and Nottingham Forest. He also assisted Danny Welbeck’s opener at Anfield against Liverpool and has started each of Brighton’s last eight league games.
