Tottenham need a new captain! Roberto De Zerbi calls on Spurs players not to ‘cry’ after Cristian Romero’s season-ending injury

Tottenham Hit by Major Injury Blow as Romero Ruled Out for Season

Tottenham Hotspur have suffered a huge setback after confirming that club captain Cristian Romero will miss the remainder of the season due to a serious knee injury. Head coach Roberto De Zerbi has called on his squad to share the leadership burden and avoid self-pity as they fight to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

A Crushing Loss for Spurs

The news of Romero’s season-ending injury comes as a heavy blow, following Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat to Sunderland last weekend. The Argentine defender was left in tears after a nasty collision with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. Speaking to the media on Friday, De Zerbi confirmed the worst.

“I feel very sorry for Romero because of this injury,” De Zerbi said. “Above all, Romero loves Tottenham, and people need to know how much he is suffering. He’s heartbroken that he can no longer play for us this season, but he has been a great captain for this club.”

Leadership by Committee

With their permanent captain sidelined, Spurs face a big decision over who takes the armband. However, De Zerbi is demanding a collective response rather than pinning hopes on one player. He wants the entire dressing room to show resilience during this difficult period.

“I haven’t decided yet because I’ve had more urgent problems to solve,” De Zerbi continued. “But in this moment, I would like every player to act as a captain.

It doesn’t matter if you start, play 30 minutes, 90 minutes, or don’t play at all—we all must feel responsible for this situation. We cannot cry about it. We have to push forward and become stronger to get out of this, because we are capable of doing that.”

Potential Leaders Stepping Up

Micky van de Ven is the natural vice-captain, but his previous experience wearing the armband ended in a red card and four straight losses in which Spurs conceded 11 goals. De Zerbi wants more from the Dutchman and others like James Maddison, who is returning from an ACL injury.

“To become a stronger team, we need many leaders,” the manager explained. “Maddison is certainly a top player on the ball, with personality and character. But I want Micky van de Ven to reach that level too.

Rodrigo Bentancur is a leader, Joao Palhinha is another leader. I want to push Dominic Solanke—he’s one of the best strikers in the Premier League, and I need him to grow in personality and character on the pitch.

“Xavi Simons is very young, but he’s a leader with the ball because he has personality and the right character to receive it when the pressure is on.

This is a tough moment for us, and we need players with personality and character. Without that, they won’t play under me.”

What’s Next for Struggling Spurs?

Sitting dangerously in 18th place with just 30 points, Tottenham are in a massive relegation battle. Their survival hopes rest on the final six matches, starting with a crucial home game against Brighton on Saturday. Spurs urgently need on-field leaders to guide them through tough upcoming trips to Aston Villa and Chelsea.
