VAR AUDIO RELEASED — The discussions around Celtic’s Controversial Penalty has been Released and it has left people divided

The debate over Celtic’s controversial stoppage-time penalty against Motherwell is still raging across Scottish football, and newly surfaced details from the VAR review have only deepened the divide.

Martin O’Neill’s side snatched a chaotic 3-2 win at Fir Park on Wednesday, with Kelechi Iheanacho converting a 99th-minute spot kick—a goal that dramatically reshaped the Premiership title race ahead of the final day.

At one point, Hearts looked poised to seize control after Motherwell rallied to make it 2-2 late on. That result would have given Hearts a major edge going into their weekend clash with Celtic.

But deep into added time, the game erupted.
A long throw into Motherwell’s box caused panic, and Celtic defender Auston Trusty challenged Sam Nicholson for the loose ball. Referee John Beaton was then sent to the VAR monitor after officials flagged a possible handball.

After a brief review, Beaton pointed to the spot.
Iheanacho made no mistake, blasting home the winner with virtually the last kick of the match.
The decision sparked fury from Motherwell players, Hearts fans, and numerous pundits, many arguing there was no clear evidence the ball even touched Nicholson’s arm.

Now, further insight into the officials’ discussions has emerged—and it has only intensified the disagreement over whether the call was correct.

According to post-match reports, the review focused on Nicholson’s arm position and whether the ball made sufficient contact inside the area.

The alleged conversation:

· “Checking possible handball… arm appears raised. Confirm point of contact? … Ball changes direction. Recommend on-field review.”
· “Understood. Going to the monitor.”
· “Freeze there… arm away from the body. Your call.

· “Okay, I’ve seen enough. Penalty.”
Some in football argue the raised arm alone justified a review, especially given Trusty’s pressure on the defender.

Others strongly disagree.

Many fans and pundits insist replays never conclusively showed the ball hit Nicholson’s arm first, believing it glanced off his head and away.

The speed of the review has also drawn criticism—how could such a monumental title-race decision be made so quickly?
Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou called it “one of the worst decisions” he’d ever seen, while Hearts manager Derek McInnes said it felt like his side were “up against everybody.”

Meanwhile, former Celtic figures and some Hoops fans have defended the officials, arguing Nicholson’s arm was in an unnatural position and impeded Trusty.
The result is that Scottish football is now split down the middle.

One side sees the penalty as VAR correctly identifying a handball offence under pressure. The other views it as yet another damaging moment eroding trust in officiating.
What’s undeniable is the magnitude of the moment.

Instead of needing a goal-difference miracle on the final day, Celtic now know that a simple win over Hearts at Celtic Park will secure the Premiership title once again.
