Tottenham could agree Marcus Rashford deal as ‘big’ summer spending plans revealed

Tottenham Hotspur could be in a position to sign Marcus Rashford this summer, provided they avoid relegation from the Premier League, according to former Manchester City financial advisor Stefan Borson.

In an exclusive interview with Football Insider, Borson claimed that Spurs are preparing for a significant spending spree at the end of the season after a difficult campaign.

Whether Rashford becomes available hinges on Barcelona’s decision to exercise their £26 million option to buy him permanently from Manchester United. The England forward is currently on a season-long loan with the Catalan club.

If Barcelona opts against making the move permanent in the coming weeks, Tottenham are expected to express interest. However, with only two matches remaining, Spurs are still locked in a relegation battle, sitting just two points above 17th-placed West Ham.

Dropping to the Championship would be disastrous for the club, meaning their summer plans depend entirely on securing top-flight survival.

Speaking to Football Insider, Borson said: “From a financial perspective, it’s realistic. Whether the player would want to come, I don’t know—but his options will be very limited if Barcelona back out. If Spurs stay up, they will invest substantially.

I expect a clear shift in their approach this summer—higher wages, higher transfer fees. They cannot afford a third season fighting relegation. That would destroy the club’s underlying value, so I can see them spending big.”

Rashford’s wages could pose a hurdle. The 28-year-old earns £325,000 per week on a contract with Manchester United that runs until June 2028.

While he has expressed a desire to remain at Barcelona, having recorded 14 goals and 14 assists in 47 appearances under Hansi Flick, the La Liga side’s financial struggles could prevent them from taking up their purchase option.
