Former referee Mike Dean has strongly criticized official Anthony Taylor and the VAR team after a controversial missed penalty call during Burnley’s thrilling 2-2 draw with Aston Villa at Turf Moor.
The dispute involved Aston Villa’s Emiliano Buendia, who appeared to be brought down in the box by a Burnley defender in the second half.
Despite replays showing a possible trip or push, Taylor waved play on and VAR did not step in. Villa supporters were outraged, feeling the decision cost their team a shot at a winner in a match where Jaidon Anthony, Ross Barkley, and Ollie Watkins all found the net.
Speaking as a pundit, Dean didn’t hold back: “This is why fans are losing trust in VAR. Taylor is a top referee, but that was a clear penalty. Buendia was clipped—contact is obvious. VAR had a perfect view and stayed silent. Both the on-field ref and video assistant got it wrong.”
Dean, who knows a thing or two about refereeing controversy, stressed that accountability must come first, even acknowledging past tendencies to protect fellow officials. “We can’t keep making excuses. These calls affect matches, league positions, and European qualification. Villa were denied a clear chance.”
The draw left Burnley still fighting near the bottom while Villa’s European pursuit suffered a slight blow.
On social media, furious Villa fans shared replay clips and demanded answers from PGMOL. Taylor, no stranger to scrutiny in high-stakes games, now finds himself at the center of renewed debates over VAR’s consistency, transparency, and the pressure on match officials.
Dean concluded: “Referees are human, but technology is there to fix clear mistakes. That didn’t happen here—and it’s not good enough.”
As the Premier League season reaches its climax, the incident highlights the urgent need for clearer rules and braver officiating. Fans deserve better, and Dean’s blunt remarks could spark vital discussions at the highest level.
