Shearer Singles Out Tarkowski as Everton Battle Back for a Deserved Point

Everton captain James Tarkowski produced a towering defensive display in a thrilling 2-2 draw at Goodison Park, earning glowing recognition from Premier League great Alan Shearer.

In a contest packed with drama, end-to-end action and late tension, the Toffees twice fought back from a goal down against a lively Crystal Palace outfit to claim a valuable point in their push for mid-table comfort. While the attacking efforts grabbed the spotlight, it was Tarkowski’s leadership at the back that truly anchored the fightback.

The 32-year-old centre-back was colossal from start to finish, dominating in the air, making telling interceptions and holding Everton’s defensive line together under persistent pressure. His calmness in possession also sparked several counter-attacking moves, and he barely put a foot wrong even as Palace threatened with speed and width out wide.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer was full of admiration for the Everton skipper. “Tarkowski was outstanding tonight,” he said. “In a game where Everton had to dig deep, he was the rock at the heart of their defence. His positioning, his reading of it, the way he marshalled that back four – it was top-class. You could see the leadership he provided. That’s why he wears the armband. For me, he was man of the match by a distance.”

Shearer, no stranger to Premier League wars of attrition, underlined how Tarkowski’s performance typified the old-school grit long associated with Everton. “This is what Goodison Park is all about – fighting spirit and players putting their bodies on the line. Tarkowski embodied that,” he said.

The point keeps Everton ticking over in the table, though manager Sean Dyche will be aware that defensive resilience alone may not suffice in the games ahead. For Tarkowski, however, it was yet another reminder of his enduring importance to the club since arriving from Burnley in 2022.

As the campaign enters its decisive phase, displays like this from seasoned campaigners could prove crucial. Shearer’s tribute only reinforces the regard in which Tarkowski is held among the game’s sharpest minds.
