“Incredibly sad”: Ben Knapper’s reaction as Norwich City confirm departure of top prospect

Norwich City sporting director Ben Knapper has called the departure of academy star Ajay Tavares to FC Barcelona “incredibly sad,” while admitting the club feels immense pride over the teenager’s achievement.

The Canaries have long been recognized for developing exciting young talent, though in recent years the pathway from academy to first team has slowed—despite the club maintaining its Category One status.

At just 16 years old, Tavares quickly emerged as one of the most promising names in Norwich’s youth setup. He delivered consistently at academy level, earned opportunities to train with the senior squad, and featured during pre-season preparations.

After delays surrounding the transfer were ironed out, the highly rated youngster has now finalized his move to the Catalan giants. Speaking on the deal, Knapper acknowledged the disappointment of losing such a gifted player but stressed the pride felt across the club.

He explained that while saying goodbye to a talent like Tavares is difficult, his development reflects the outstanding work carried out by everyone involved in the academy.

Knapper added that the player has been a credit to himself and his family, and said the club couldn’t be prouder to see him take such a significant step—joining one of the most iconic institutions in world football.

With Tavares gone, the focus at Colney now turns to identifying and nurturing the next generation of prospects.

There had been hopes he might eventually break into the first team and potentially generate a major financial return for the club down the line. Instead, he begins a new chapter in Spain, and Norwich will wish him every success.

In recent seasons, players such as Liam Gibbs, Lucien Mahovo, and Gabe Forsyth have been involved with the senior setup—though all three arrived from other clubs for transfer fees rather than progressing entirely through Norwich’s academy system.

Meanwhile, attention also remains on first-team matters. Head coach Philippe Clement is focused on steering Norwich further clear of the Championship relegation zone. The Canaries currently sit 18th, six points above the drop, with a late push for the play-off places appearing unlikely given the gap to the top six.

Next up is a home fixture against Sheffield Wednesday. With the Owls having recently been relegated following defeat to Sheffield United, Norwich will view the match as a strong opportunity to secure three valuable points and potentially extend their cushion above the relegation places to nine points.
