“We deserved to win”- Roberto De Zerbi reacts as Tottenham continue to drop points
Tottenham’s Premier League relegation fears deepened this weekend after their draw with Brighton left them stuck in the bottom three for another week.
Despite delivering one of their stronger performances in recent memory, Spurs were unable to secure a much-needed victory. Goals from Pedro Porro and Xavi Simons put them in a strong position, but Brighton fought back through Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter to force a share of the points.
The north London club has now gone 15 matches without a win and is still searching for its first league triumph of 2026.
Nevertheless, manager Roberto De Zerbi remained optimistic about his side’s chances of beating the drop, insisting they have the necessary quality to survive.
“Brighton are a very good team. At the moment, they’re playing well, but I believe we deserved to win,” the Italian coach said.
“I’m very proud of my players’ performance. They gave everything, with the right mentality, the right fight, and the right character.
“I’m only disappointed with the result—for my players and the fans—because the atmosphere today was incredible.
“It’s tough. Everyone knows we’re going through a difficult moment, but we still have five games left and 15 points to play for.
“This team is capable of winning five in a row. I know it’s hard to believe my words right now, but if you look at the players and their level, I think we can do it.”
Despite the disappointing outcome, Tottenham showed encouraging signs, led by Simons, who set up the first goal and scored the second.
“He played very well—a great game,” De Zerbi said of the Dutch midfielder. “I think he can get even better, because a player like him needs to feel confidence from his manager.
“I’m lucky to have him on my team, but he’s also lucky because, as a number 10, I understand him better than other coaches would.”
De Zerbi will be hoping for more displays like this from Simons if Tottenham are to escape their relegation battle.
