Tottenham vs Brighton: Ex-referee reacts to controversy moments before Xavi Simons goal

According to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee Keith Hackett, Xavi Simons’ goal against Brighton was “completely legitimate,” even though some fans called for a foul in the buildup involving Tottenham Hotspur.

Hackett exclusively told Football Insider that VAR was correct not to intervene after Lucas Bergvall legally took the ball off Jan Paul van Hecke.

Brighton supporters were adamant a free-kick should have been awarded before Spurs’ No. 7 curled in a stunning long-range strike and celebrated with the crowd on Saturday, 18 April.

Although no VAR check appeared to take place, Tottenham still ended up drawing 2-2. Jan Paul van Hecke later dispossessed Kevin Danso, allowing Georginio Rutter to slot home another equalizer.

Lucas Bergvall’s challenge on Brighton star deemed legal in controversial moment
Spurs fans held their breath at the prospect of a VAR review, but with Brighton quickly restarting play, it was evident the goal would stand in North London.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former referee said: “Lucas Bergvall’s challenge was entirely legitimate, and the referee was right to let play continue. It was a good goal, and I’m pleased VAR stayed out of it.”

Tottenham looked set to claim a vital three points at home, only for Fabian Hurzeler’s side to rescue a draw in the fourth minute of added time through Rutter.

How did Tottenham fans react to the late equalizer?
Pundits tried to stay positive despite the late heartbreak, noting Spurs earned a valuable point near the bottom of the Premier League—but it may not be enough.

Ange Postecoglou’s side sit one point above the relegation zone, and with West Ham facing Crystal Palace on Monday, 20 April, Spurs fans will be watching Selhurst Park closely.

On social media, however, many supporters have already resigned themselves to potential relegation, calling the players “spineless bottle jobs.” The reaction is hardly surprising given how close they came to all three points, and they’ll need to prove their doubters wrong against Wolves on Saturday, 25 April.
