West Ham Star Under Fire After Embarrassing Cardiff Display as Scott Parker Faces Major Midfield Decision

West Ham United managed to rescue a point against Cardiff City, but Scott Parker could hardly have wished for a more difficult start to life as the club’s new manager.

The Hammers endured a disastrous opening 45 minutes at the Cardiff City Stadium on Wednesday, November 4, as Jack Moylan produced a stunning first-half hat-trick. His performance left the travelling West Ham supporters furious, with boos and jeers ringing out from the away section.

However, Parker appeared to deliver a strong message to his players during the interval. West Ham responded positively after the restart, with Divin Mukasa, Arne Engels and Max Kilman all finding the back of the net to rescue an entertaining 3-3 draw.

Despite avoiding defeat, the result leaves the Hammers eighth in the Championship table, exactly where they were sitting under former manager Nuno Espirito Santo before his departure.

Parker has inherited largely the same group of players, and their shortcomings could become a major obstacle as he attempts to turn things around during the 2026-27 campaign.

Several members of the squad, including Morato, Mads Hermansen and Joel Veltman, have struggled to convince, but their performances against Cardiff were not the biggest concern.

Soungoutou Magassa’s West Ham Future Looks Increasingly Uncertain

West Ham’s opening-half performance was disappointing from almost every perspective, but midfielder Soungoutou Magassa endured a particularly difficult evening.

The midfielder struggled to make any meaningful contribution during the first 45 minutes. According to FotMob, he completed just 77 per cent of his passes, failed to register a single tackle, won none of his ground or aerial duels and committed two fouls.

Magassa also received a yellow card following a challenge on Alex Robertson, making his substitution at half-time almost inevitable. Parker subsequently brought on Mohamadou Kante in his place.

The French midfielder has spent much of the season struggling for regular opportunities, raising questions about why Nuno had been reluctant to give him more playing time. However, his latest performance against Cardiff has only increased concerns about his suitability for the team.

West Ham may now have to consider cutting their losses by allowing Magassa to leave during the January transfer window. Finding a club willing to take him, however, could prove challenging.

Scott Parker Has an Obvious Solution to West Ham’s Midfield Problem

Although West Ham invested a significant amount of money to bring Magassa to the London Stadium, particularly following their relegation to the Championship last season, his performances have done little to justify that investment.

Parker must now consider making difficult decisions, and giving Mohamadou Kante a more prominent role in midfield could be one of the most sensible moves available to him.

Kante has shown plenty of promise whenever he has been given an opportunity, yet his development has arguably been restricted by the competition for places in the squad.

Despite recording three goals and two assists, the midfielder has started just eight of West Ham’s 14 Championship matches so far this season.

Tomas Soucek remains a more experienced option, but Kante offers youthful energy, impressive natural ability and the kind of attacking enthusiasm that can get supporters off their seats.

Parker now has an important decision to make. If he wants to improve West Ham’s midfield and get the best out of his available players, handing Kante more regular starts could be the answer.
