Opta’s supercomputer has released its latest predictions for Tottenham Hotspur’s possible finishing positions in the Premier League this season, and the figures could leave supporters concerned about the club’s prospects.
The latest projections indicate that Roberto De Zerbi’s team face a greater possibility of ending the campaign in the bottom half of the table than securing European qualification.
Tottenham finally ended their disappointing start to the league season by defeating Coventry City, earning their first Premier League victory and moving away from the relegation zone. Despite the much-needed result, Opta’s statistical model still gives Spurs a significant chance of dropping into the bottom three.
After finishing 17th in each of the previous two campaigns, Tottenham supporters had hoped De Zerbi would turn things around following another expensive summer transfer window. However, the early-season struggles suggest the Italian manager still has considerable work ahead of him.
Opta Gives Tottenham a 20.61% Chance of Relegation
Tottenham’s victory over Coventry helped them climb three places to 13th in Opta’s predicted Premier League standings. Nevertheless, the club’s individual finishing probabilities reveal a more concerning outlook for the remainder of the campaign.
According to the figures provided by Opta, Spurs have a 20.61% probability of finishing in the relegation zone. That figure is more than twice their 8.50% chance of securing a top-six position and potentially qualifying for European football.
The projections also suggest Tottenham have a 70.38% chance of ending the season in the bottom half of the table. Meanwhile, their probability of finishing among the Premier League’s top 10 clubs stands at just 29.62%.
Interestingly, 16th place is identified as Tottenham’s single most likely final position, carrying a probability of 7.60%. Finishing 13th, 17th or 18th is also considered a realistic possibility, with the probabilities for those positions reportedly close to one another.
These figures highlight the challenge facing De Zerbi as he attempts to rebuild confidence and restore Tottenham’s competitiveness.
Tottenham’s Predicted Premier League Finishing Positions
Opta’s model calculates the probability of Spurs finishing in every position from first to 20th. While the overall projections are far from encouraging, relegation remains less likely than survival according to the current figures.
It is also important to remember that these predictions are not final outcomes. The supercomputer will continue adjusting its calculations as more matches are played and the performances of Tottenham and their rivals become clearer.
The victory over Coventry has already provided Spurs with a boost in the actual league standings. They will now be hoping to build on that result, collect more points and close the gap on the clubs competing for European places.
De Zerbi will be particularly keen to ensure that the performance represents the beginning of a sustained improvement rather than an isolated positive result.
Gus Poyet Sets Tottenham a Top-10 Target
Former Tottenham midfielder and assistant coach Gus Poyet believes the North London club should aim to finish inside the Premier League’s top half despite their difficult opening to the season.
Poyet believes Tottenham must use the campaign to rediscover their identity under De Zerbi, develop greater mental strength and adopt a more positive approach to matches.
Speaking about the expectations surrounding Spurs, Poyet said:
“I think Spurs this year need to have a recovery season to get in the top half of the table, getting the identity from Roberto de Zerbi, getting stronger mentally as a group, not thinking always about the possibility of losing and going to the pitch thinking of the possibility of winning.
“So it’s a transition year. But obviously, with the money they spent, they need to be in the top 10 and if it’s possible getting a European competition.”
His comments underline the expectations that come with Tottenham’s significant investment in new players. Although rebuilding may take time, the club’s spending means supporters will naturally demand better performances and a stronger league position.
Can De Zerbi Prove Opta Wrong?
Tottenham still have an opportunity to change the narrative surrounding their season. Their win against Coventry has provided some encouragement, but consistency will be essential if they are to move away from the lower reaches of the table.
De Zerbi must now find a way to turn improved performances into regular victories while helping his players regain the confidence needed to compete against stronger opposition.
Although Opta’s projections raise questions about Tottenham’s chances of achieving their ambitions, the season remains far from over. A positive run of results could quickly improve their position and change the supercomputer’s calculations.
For now, Spurs will be focused on building momentum, climbing the table and demonstrating that they can achieve considerably more than the current predictions suggest.
