Roberto De Zerbi gives two good news and one bad news ahead of Tottenham vs. Brighton

Tottenham Hotspur face Brighton and Hove Albion in a vital Premier League showdown on Saturday evening, with Roberto De Zerbi set to come up against his former club.

Spurs are facing a real threat of relegation to the Championship, and their troubles deepened last weekend with a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland—far from the start De Zerbi had hoped for since taking charge. With only six matches remaining, the Italian manager will be eager to secure a win against his old team to spark a turnaround for the Lilywhites.

But Brighton will be no easy opponent. Fabian Hurzeler’s side enter the contest in strong form, having won three straight matches, including a 2-0 victory over Burnley in their last outing. The Seagulls will be determined to take all three points in North London to strengthen their push for European football.

De Zerbi gives Tottenham injury update ahead of Brighton clash

Earlier this week, De Zerbi and Spurs received a significant setback as captain Cristian Romero was ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury. The centre-back suffered the injury against Sunderland, and scans later confirmed he will be sidelined for at least six weeks—a bitter end to his campaign.

On a more positive note, Rodrigo Bentancur has returned to team training after three months out. Speaking ahead of the Brighton match, De Zerbi shared the latest on his squad’s fitness:

“Bentancur is available to play. I don’t know if he’ll start or not. Bissouma is available, but Vicario is not,” De Zerbi said in his press conference (via Football London).

No Vicario again

It will be a welcome sight to see Bentancur back in action. The Uruguayan’s composure and experience on the ball will be crucial in the battle to avoid the drop. However, Guglielmo Vicario is still not ready to rejoin the squad.

Spurs’ number one underwent hernia surgery during the March international break and missed the loss to Sunderland. De Zerbi had hoped to have him back for the weekend, but Vicario was absent from Thursday’s training session. As a result, Antonin Kinsky will continue in goal.

Every member of the Tottenham squad must raise their performance levels if they are to overcome Brighton and secure their first league win of 2026.
