Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has confidently predicted that the North London club will finish above Manchester United in the Premier League this season, despite their disappointing start to the campaign.
Tottenham have endured a difficult opening to the season, spending much of the early weeks hovering around the relegation zone. Their performances have fallen well short of expectations, particularly after the club invested heavily in strengthening the squad during the summer transfer window.
However, there are signs that Spurs could be turning a corner after finally recording their first Premier League victory of the campaign against Coventry City. The important win lifted Roberto De Zerbi’s side to 16th place in the standings, taking their points tally to six from a possible 21.
With renewed confidence following that result, Tottenham will be hoping to build momentum and climb further up the table in the coming weeks.
Tim Sherwood Predicts Tottenham Will Finish Above Manchester United
Before the season began, several football pundits expected Tottenham to challenge for a European qualification spot, with some predicting that they could secure a top-four or top-six finish.
Their poor start, however, has forced many observers to reconsider those predictions, with concerns growing over whether Spurs can recover sufficiently to compete near the top of the table.

Sherwood remains optimistic about Tottenham’s prospects and believes they have enough quality to finish in the top half. The former Spurs boss has even backed his old club to finish above Manchester United, predicting an eighth-place finish for De Zerbi’s men.
Speaking to Jamie Redknapp on The Overlap, Sherwood was asked whether Tottenham would finish above United this season.
He responded: “Yeah, I genuinely think that. Genuinely believe, on the evidence I’ve seen, I am not sure, because Man United have got the extra games, I am not sure they will be able to cope with that.
“I think Tottenham will finish eighth. In around eighth, you know.”
Sherwood’s prediction suggests he believes Tottenham’s early-season difficulties will not prevent them from putting together a strong run of results as the campaign progresses.
Gary Neville Also Backs Tottenham to Climb the Table
Sherwood is not the only prominent football figure who believes Tottenham can improve significantly under De Zerbi.
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has also expressed confidence in Spurs’ ability to climb the Premier League standings, backing them to challenge for a place in the top six or eight.
Neville shared his assessment after Tottenham’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend, suggesting that their performance offered encouraging signs for the future.
He explained that if Spurs could maintain the same intensity and tactical organisation, they would have a strong chance of collecting more points and scoring plenty of goals.
Neville stressed the importance of keeping Tottenham’s most talented players fit, while also highlighting the need for hard work, defensive organisation and a quicker passing tempo.
He also praised De Zerbi’s coaching ability, pointing to the Italian manager’s previous work at Brighton as evidence that he knows how to build an effective football team.
Although Neville stopped short of guaranteeing that Tottenham would immediately surge up the standings, he believes the club could make steady progress over the next few months.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a certain thing that they’re going to all of a sudden fly up the table. But I actually think Tottenham will start to gradually push up towards top six, eight in the next couple of months,” Neville said.
“I do think we’ll start to see that sort of movement up the table. I do feel that.”
Tottenham Have an Opportunity to Turn Their Season Around
With the gap between Tottenham and Manchester United remaining relatively small, Sherwood’s prediction is not beyond the realms of possibility.
Spurs have six points, while United have seven, leaving only a single point between the two clubs. Tottenham are also just four points behind Everton, who currently occupy eighth place.
That narrow margin means a short winning run could significantly improve their position in the standings.
However, De Zerbi’s side must demonstrate greater consistency if they are to justify the optimism expressed by Sherwood and Neville. Their recent victory over Coventry provides an encouraging starting point, but maintaining that level of performance will be crucial.
Tottenham will now be focused on turning their improved performances into regular victories as they attempt to move away from the bottom end of the table.
If De Zerbi can get the best out of his talented squad and address the problems that contributed to their disappointing start, a top-eight finish could become a realistic target rather than an ambitious prediction.
