London — Tottenham Hotspur secured their first Premier League victory of the season on Monday evening, defeating Coventry City 3-1 at home, but the win was preceded by fresh injury concerns that left fans and management alike on edge.
The return of James Maddison to the starting XI after an extended absence, alongside Dejan Kulusevski’s appearance from the bench, provided almost as much encouragement as the result itself. Maddison marked his comeback with a delightful opening goal, though Jack Rudoni levelled for the visitors shortly after the interval. Omar Marmoush restored Tottenham’s lead with his first goal for the club, and Ben Davies sealed the three points for the hosts in stoppage time.
Udogie’s Surprise Absence
Before kick-off, however, Spurs were dealt an unexpected blow. Destiny Udogie was conspicuously absent from the matchday squad, catching supporters off guard given the lack of prior indication that the left-back was carrying an injury.
Roberto De Zerbi later clarified the situation, explaining that the Italian international had picked up a knee problem during the 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford.
“Destiny Udogie played 70 minutes, and he suffered a problem in his knee, and we didn’t take a risk,” De Zerbi told Sky Sports.
The manager’s explanation underscores the club’s cautious approach with a player whose recent history has been plagued by fitness issues. Udogie has contended with hamstring and calf problems over the past two years, and a knee complaint last season restricted him to just 20 Premier League appearances.
Having featured in four of Tottenham’s six league fixtures this campaign, Udogie now faces an uncertain spell on the sidelines.
Robertson Steps In, Then Steps Off
In Udogie’s absence, Andy Robertson was handed the left-back role against Coventry and delivered a solid performance after sitting out the United draw due to workload management. However, the Scottish international was forced off in the second half with a knee issue of his own.
Early indications suggest Robertson has not sustained a serious injury and should be available for the weekend trip to Chelsea. Should he be ruled out alongside Udogie, De Zerbi will likely turn to the experienced Ben Davies to fill the left-back position.
Mixed Emotions
While the victory lifted Tottenham off the bottom of the table and provided a much-needed boost, the mounting injury concerns at full-back threaten to complicate preparations for a demanding run of fixtures. For De Zerbi, the result was welcome relief; the fitness of his defensive options, however, remains a pressing worry.
