adminLucas Bergvall has insisted that he never tried to force his way out of Tottenham despite intense speculation surrounding his future during the summer transfer window.
The 20-year-old Sweden international appeared to be heading towards the exit door after finding himself on the fringes of Tottenham’s squad last season. Reports in July suggested that Bergvall had become frustrated with his limited opportunities, particularly his desire to play more regularly in his preferred position.
There were also claims that the midfielder had asked to leave Spurs, while Nottingham Forest emerged as one of the clubs reportedly interested in securing his services.
Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi subsequently added fuel to the speculation when he indicated that Bergvall would be allowed to leave if he no longer wanted to remain at the club.
However, the situation changed dramatically in September when Tottenham confirmed that Bergvall had agreed to a new long-term contract.
The Swedish midfielder has now committed himself to Spurs until 2031, with the new agreement reportedly including a significant improvement to his salary.
Speaking while on international duty with Sweden, Bergvall offered his version of events and made it clear that he never attempted to engineer a departure.
“Last year was tough, and that was reflected quite a bit in how things went,” Bergvall said via Fotbollskanalen.
“But I’ve always had a good dialogue with the club. I’m incredibly happy to have signed a new contract. There was a lot of speculation this summer.”
When asked directly whether he had considered leaving Tottenham, Bergvall maintained that he did not try to force the club into allowing him to depart.
“I let time do the talking. I didn’t try to force anything, just tried to be happy. I’ve always had a good dialogue with the club,” he explained.
His comments suggest that, despite the considerable uncertainty surrounding his future, discussions between the player and Tottenham remained constructive throughout the summer.
Bergvall was also questioned about the specific details of his new agreement, but the midfielder was unwilling to reveal too much about the contract.
When asked whether the deal contains a release clause, he responded: “Is that what you want to hear? That’s not something I’m going to say.”
He added: “I don’t know if I should go into exactly what’s in the contract, as it’s quite personal, but I’m incredibly happy to have signed a new deal and feel positive about the process.”
The new contract represents a significant change in circumstances for Bergvall, who had appeared to be facing an uncertain future at Tottenham only a few months ago.
The midfielder will now be hoping that his improved contractual situation is followed by greater opportunities on the pitch.
Tottenham, meanwhile, have endured a difficult opening to the new Premier League campaign. Spurs entered the first international break sitting bottom of the Premier League table and had already suffered elimination from the Carabao Cup.
Despite the team’s disappointing start, Bergvall has remained involved in De Zerbi’s plans.
The Swedish midfielder has featured in five of Tottenham’s seven matches so far this season, starting three of those games.
With his long-term future now settled, Bergvall’s next challenge will be to establish himself as a regular starter and demonstrate why Tottenham were prepared to hand him a new contract running until 2031.
