Gary Neville has delivered a remarkably blunt assessment of Oliver Glasner following Nottingham Forest’s disappointing 1-0 home defeat to newly promoted Coventry City.
The Sky Sports pundit did not hold back during a live studio appearance, with his comments quickly attracting attention after clips of the discussion began circulating across social media.
Neville was particularly critical of Forest’s performance at the City Ground, arguing that the team failed to show the intensity, creativity and leadership required to overcome Coventry.
“I’ve seen some soft performances this season,” Neville said, before describing Forest’s display as being “as soft as it gets.”
He questioned how Forest could struggle so badly at home against a Coventry side that had previously won only one Premier League game in 25 years.
According to Neville, the performance raised serious questions about the team’s preparation and mentality.
The former Manchester United captain also turned his attention towards Glasner, suggesting that the manager has already been given sufficient time and resources to improve the team.
Neville argued that Forest looked short of ideas and intensity, particularly after Coventry took the lead. Rather than responding aggressively and attempting to take control of the match, he felt the home side appeared to wait for something to happen.
For Neville, that ultimately placed responsibility on the manager.
The pundit was also critical of the controversy surrounding Igor Jesus’ late disallowed goal. While acknowledging that Forest were entitled to debate the VAR decision, Neville warned against allowing the incident to distract from the wider problems exposed by the performance.
He argued that Forest should not need a controversial decision to give themselves a chance of rescuing a point against a newly promoted opponent at home.
Neville then highlighted what he believes has become a recurring pattern under Glasner.
He pointed to Forest being slow to react, slow to alter their shape and lacking urgency when matches begin to move away from them. In his view, individual errors cannot continually be used to explain results when similar problems keep appearing.
The former United defender also challenged the expectations surrounding Forest before the season.
There had been discussion about the club potentially competing for European football, but Neville suggested that their current performances had raised completely different concerns.
He praised Coventry for remaining organised, taking their opportunity and leaving the City Ground with all three points, while questioning why Forest had made the task so straightforward for their opponents.
Neville described the situation as involving failures in preparation, mentality and ultimately management.
His comments have since generated a divided reaction.
Some supporters and observers believe the criticism was unnecessarily harsh towards Glasner, particularly given the manager’s previous record of building competitive teams. Others have welcomed Neville’s assessment, arguing that his comments reflected frustrations already being expressed by sections of the Forest fanbase.
Regardless of the reaction, Neville’s assessment was far from the cautious analysis often heard during post-match television discussions.
His comments have added further pressure around Glasner and Nottingham Forest at a time when the club will be desperate for improved performances and results.
Whether Neville’s criticism ultimately proves justified or excessive will depend on how Forest respond in their upcoming matches. For now, however, his uncompromising assessment has ensured that the defeat to Coventry remains a major talking point.
