Alan Shearer has delivered a strong assessment of Roberto De Zerbi following Tottenham Hotspur’s failure to secure their first Premier League victory of the season.
Tottenham will enter the upcoming three-week international break in the relegation zone after failing to win any of their opening five league matches. De Zerbi’s team have endured a difficult beginning to the campaign, having only narrowly avoided relegation during the previous season.
The Italian manager arrived late last season with the immediate responsibility of helping Spurs escape a difficult relegation battle. After successfully keeping the club in the Premier League, De Zerbi was expected to oversee a rebuilding process during the summer.
Tottenham subsequently provided substantial financial backing, with several new players arriving at the club, including a number of high-profile additions. Expectations were therefore raised ahead of the new campaign.
However, Spurs have struggled to translate that investment into results.
It took Tottenham until their fifth Premier League match to finally score their first league goal of the campaign. Conor Gallagher eventually ended the drought during Saturday’s 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa.
The result meant Tottenham had now failed to win any of their opening five league fixtures, further increasing the pressure surrounding De Zerbi.
Alan Shearer Delivers Verdict On De Zerbi
With Tottenham’s poor run continuing, questions are increasingly being asked about whether De Zerbi can quickly transform the team’s fortunes.
Former France international Christophe Dugarry had already criticised the manager following Spurs’ disappointing start, which was compounded by their EFL Cup elimination against Liverpool.
Now, former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has also raised concerns about Tottenham’s performances and highlighted the responsibility resting on De Zerbi.
Speaking on BBC coverage, Shearer pointed to the number of players signed by the manager who featured against Aston Villa and argued that Tottenham still appear vulnerable despite their significant summer investment.
“He’s signed six of those players who started today. There’s definitely a fragility and weakness about them,” Shearer said.
The former England striker also highlighted Tottenham’s poor record when falling behind, noting that they had failed to win any of their previous 48 matches in which they conceded first.
“That tells you what and who they are at this moment in time and it’s his job to change that,” Shearer added.
The comments underline the scale of the challenge facing De Zerbi. With several of the players in the starting lineup arriving during his tenure, the manager will be expected to find solutions and improve the team’s ability to respond when matches turn against them.
Despite Tottenham’s difficult beginning, De Zerbi has remained composed and continues to believe that he can change the situation.
The international break could provide the Spurs boss with valuable time to assess his tactics, identify the team’s weaknesses and work on solutions before Premier League action resumes.
However, with Tottenham still searching for their first league win and sitting in the relegation places, pressure is likely to remain high.
De Zerbi now faces the challenge of turning a heavily backed squad into a team capable of producing consistent results, with supporters hoping for a significant response when the Premier League returns.
