Unai Emery Delivers Honest Verdict On Tottenham Performance After Aston Villa’s 3-2 Win

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has delivered an honest assessment of his side’s performance after they secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

Villa entered the Premier League clash still searching for their first league victory of the campaign, but Emery’s team produced a disciplined display to leave North London with all three points.

The visitors had to withstand periods of pressure from Tottenham early in the match, with goalkeeper Zion Suzuki making several important saves to keep Villa level. However, Emery’s players remained patient and eventually found a breakthrough in first-half stoppage time.

Johan Manzambi opened the scoring after Villa capitalised on a defensive lapse from the hosts. Nicolas Jackson then doubled the advantage in the second half before Emiliano Buendía produced a superb long-range finish to put Villa 3-0 ahead.

Tottenham managed to respond late through Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke, but Villa held on to claim a 3-2 victory.

Speaking after the match, Emery admitted that Villa had been thoroughly tested but was pleased with the way his players responded to the challenge.

“We were challenged in this match in the level we want to be and how they demanded that of us. It was a very demanding match,” Emery said.

The Villa boss was particularly pleased with the way his team followed the plan that had been prepared before kick-off.

“How we planned this match and the response of the players was fantastic,” he explained.

Emery also highlighted two important aspects of Villa’s performance: their defensive resilience and their ability to make the most of their opportunities.

“We defended with resilience. We waited for our moment to threaten them, and we were clinical,” he added.

That assessment was reflected in the way the match unfolded. Tottenham created opportunities during the opening stages, but Villa refused to panic and remained organised.

Once Manzambi gave them the lead, Emery’s side became increasingly dangerous on the counterattack. Jackson’s second-half goal demonstrated that threat, while Buendía’s strike gave Villa a three-goal cushion before Tottenham’s late response.

Emery also singled out Jackson for praise, explaining that the striker is beginning to understand how best to use his qualities within Villa’s system.

“He is understanding of how we can exploit his quality better and his positioning,” Emery said.

The manager also stressed the importance of having runners around Jackson who can create space and provide options behind the opposition defence.

For Emery, the victory was particularly significant because Villa had endured a difficult opening to their Premier League campaign. The three points moved them onto four points from five matches, while Tottenham remained on two points and in the relegation zone after their fifth consecutive league match without a victory.

The result also gave Villa something to build on heading into the international break.

Tottenham, meanwhile, will have plenty to address after conceding three goals before producing a late fightback. Their two late strikes were ultimately insufficient, with Villa’s earlier clinical finishing proving decisive.

For Emery, however, the focus was firmly on the qualities his players showed when the pressure increased: discipline, resilience, patience and clinical finishing.

His post-match comments made it clear that Villa’s victory was not simply about the final scoreline. Emery was pleased with how closely his players followed the tactical plan and, most importantly, how they responded when Tottenham tested them.

With the first league win of the season finally secured, Emery will now hope the victory can provide Villa with the platform to build greater consistency in the matches ahead.
