A recent study has now ranked 50 of the best football stadiums across Europe, taking several important factors into consideration. The research looked beyond simply the size or reputation of each ground, instead examining the overall experience available to supporters.
The ranking was based on factors including stadium capacity, average ticket prices, the cost of a pint, accessibility through public transport, disabled facilities and online Google reviews.
Sunderland’s Stadium of Light was one of the notable inclusions, finishing 46th with a score of 4.36. Rangers’ Ibrox Stadium also made the list at 42nd, while Porto’s Estadio do Dragao was ranked 43rd.
Further up the rankings, Germany’s football stadiums continued to make a strong impression. The Veltins-Arena, home of Schalke, finished 35th, while Borussia Dortmund’s famous Signal Iduna Park eventually claimed the number-one position.
The Olympic Stadium in Berlin, which hosted the Euro 2024 final between Spain and England, finished 39th with a score of 4.43. Other notable grounds in the middle section included St Jakob-Park, Friends Arena and Stadio San Nicola.
Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium was ranked 24th, recording a score of 4.71. It finished just ahead of several famous European venues, including Rome’s Olympic Stadium and Bilbao’s San Mames.
Celtic Park was the highest-ranked stadium in the 11th-to-20th section, finishing 11th with a score of 5.04. Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena surprisingly missed out on the top 10, ending the ranking in 13th place with 4.99.
The top 10 featured some of the most famous stadiums in world football.
Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park claimed first place with a score of 5.94, largely reflecting its legendary atmosphere and the famous Yellow Wall.
Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu came second with 5.92, followed by Barcelona’s Camp Nou in third with 5.73.
Manchester United’s Old Trafford was the highest-ranked English club stadium, taking fourth place with 5.52. AC Milan’s San Siro followed in fifth.
The Emirates Stadium, home of Arsenal, was sixth with 5.31, while Tottenham Hotspur Stadium came seventh with 5.25.
Wembley Stadium was ranked eighth, followed by France’s Stade de France in ninth and Dublin’s Croke Park in tenth.
The results highlight the incredible variety of football venues across Europe. From historic grounds such as Old Trafford, San Siro and Camp Nou to modern stadiums such as Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, supporters have no shortage of remarkable venues to visit.
