adminNewcastle United have reportedly joined the growing list of clubs interested in Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton after a fresh update emerged regarding his long-term future at Selhurst Park.
Wharton has already made 99 appearances for Palace, contributing one goal and 12 assists during his time with the Eagles. Despite being under contract until 2029, the 22-year-old could reportedly be allowed to leave in 2027 if one of Europe’s biggest clubs makes a serious approach.
Former scout Mick Brown claims there is an informal understanding surrounding Wharton’s future, with Palace prepared to listen if a major European side comes calling.
“I’ve heard there is a sort of informal agreement in place, and if a club like a Man City or Real Madrid come in for him next summer, Palace won’t stand in his way,” Brown said.
He added that Palace recognise the midfielder’s enormous potential and want to keep him for as long as possible before eventually allowing him to take the next step in his career.
“We’ve seen similar from Palace in the past. They think he’s going to have a very bright future, so they’re going to hold on to him for as long as they can, but they’ll let him go and flourish,” Brown explained.
Newcastle may not possess the same global pull as Manchester City or Real Madrid, but securing Wharton would still represent a major coup for Matthias Jaissle and his midfield options.
One of Wharton’s biggest advantages is his experience at Premier League level despite his young age. The former Blackburn Rovers player has already established himself as a key figure for Palace and has continued to attract significant praise for his performances.
The England international has started all three of Palace’s Premier League matches this season, underlining his importance to the team.
His ability to progress the ball is particularly impressive. Wharton is averaging 12.7 line-breaking passes per 90 minutes in the league this campaign, the second-highest figure among Pierre Sage’s players.
His work-rate also makes him an attractive option. Wharton has covered 34.4 kilometres in the Premier League this season, more than any current member of Jaissle’s Newcastle squad.
Those qualities could make the four-cap England international an excellent fit at St James’ Park, and Newcastle are now reportedly positioning themselves for a potential move.
Newcastle join growing Wharton race
According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle have entered the race for Wharton’s signature, although they face competition from Premier League heavyweights Liverpool and Chelsea.
Palace are in no rush to sell, however. With the midfielder tied down until 2029, the Eagles have considerable negotiating power and are reportedly looking for a fee of at least £75 million.
Newcastle are understood to be monitoring the situation closely and could become more active if there is a realistic opportunity to complete a deal.
The Magpies reportedly regard Wharton as an ideal addition to their midfield, particularly because of his technical ability, passing range and Premier League experience.
However, Newcastle may need to improve their own fortunes if they are to convince the midfielder to choose St James’ Park over some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Wharton is reportedly eager to test himself at the highest possible level, meaning Newcastle’s ambitions and performances could ultimately play an important role in determining whether they can win the race for his signature.
For now, Palace remain firmly in control, but with Newcastle, Liverpool and Chelsea all showing interest, Wharton’s future could become one of the Premier League’s biggest transfer stories.
