Newcastle have strengthened their forward line further by spending heavily on Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who arrived from Lille on deadline day of the summer transfer window. There is plenty of excitement surrounding what the young attacker could deliver at St James’ Park.
The Magpies also have William Osula within their ranks. Although the striker is currently sidelined through injury, he found the net nine times last season and is expected to play a bigger role once he returns to full fitness.
Despite having several attacking options, Newcastle have surprisingly been linked with a potential move for former Real Madrid superstar Karim Benzema, who is currently a free agent.
However, the veteran striker’s unusual contractual situation could make a return to European football extremely complicated.
Benzema’s contract situation complicates European return
According to RMC Sport, Lyon explored the possibility of bringing Benzema back to France during the summer after making contact with an intermediary.
However, Lyon sporting director Matthieu Louis-Jean explained that the club ultimately decided against pursuing the opportunity because of the complications surrounding Benzema’s existing contractual arrangements.
“It’s true there was contact with an intermediary this summer regarding Karim. For me, it didn’t go any further than that,” Louis-Jean said.
“It was impossible given Karim’s contract situation. Karim is a phenomenal player. We didn’t even try to pursue it further because we knew how difficult the situation was.”
Benzema has spent the latter stages of his career in Saudi Arabia after leaving Real Madrid. He initially joined Al-Ittihad before later moving to Al-Hilal.
He has now departed the Saudi club and is technically a free agent, but his situation is more complicated than it might initially appear.
The French striker reportedly has an ambassadorial agreement with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). To continue receiving the financial benefits attached to that arrangement, Benzema has two apparent options: retire from professional football or continue his playing career within the Saudi Pro League.
Choosing another destination could reportedly result in the agreement being terminated, potentially costing him tens of millions of euros annually.
That financial consideration makes a return to European football difficult to imagine under the current circumstances.
Could Newcastle provide a way forward?
There could, however, be an interesting potential solution because Newcastle United are also owned by PIF.
As Sport Witness has suggested, that connection could theoretically give the Magpies an avenue to explore if Benzema is determined to end his playing career in European football.
A move to Newcastle would obviously be a major story, although there are plenty of questions surrounding whether such a deal would actually be possible.
Benzema is now 38, and expecting him to reproduce the form that made him one of Europe’s greatest forwards would be unrealistic. The Premier League would also represent an entirely new challenge for a player who has never previously competed in England’s top flight.
Nevertheless, the arrival of a player with Benzema’s experience and reputation would generate enormous attention.
Even if he could not play every week, Newcastle could potentially use him as an experienced attacking option while allowing him to pass valuable knowledge on to the club’s younger forwards.
For now, though, the idea remains little more than an intriguing possibility. There is no indication that negotiations are advanced or that Newcastle are actively pursuing the Frenchman.
Benzema’s next move remains uncertain, and his contractual relationship with PIF could play a decisive role in determining where — or whether — he continues his remarkable career.
