Why Fernandez-Pardo Could Become Newcastle’s New Attacking Star
Nick Woltemade’s loan departure to Juventus at the end of the summer transfer window means Newcastle will have to look elsewhere for attacking inspiration. The club-record £69 million signing failed to fully deliver the expected impact, but Fernandez-Pardo offers Jaissle a different profile.
At just 21 years old, the Belgian possesses the pace, aggression and directness that could make him perfectly suited to Jaissle’s high-intensity approach.
Fernandez-Pardo is capable of operating from the left side or through the middle as a No. 9. His willingness to run at defenders and attack the penalty area could give Newcastle another dangerous dimension in the final third.
Jaissle will be hoping those qualities can help fill the enormous void left by Gordon, who completed a £69 million move to Barcelona during the summer after becoming one of Newcastle’s most influential attacking players.
There are similarities between the two forwards. Both possess considerable pace, are comfortable operating in multiple attacking positions and are willing to take responsibility when Newcastle need someone to make something happen.
However, Fernandez-Pardo may not be the only new arrival capable of becoming a major figure at St. James’ Park.
Could Nico Gonzalez Be Newcastle’s New Anthony Gordon?
Gordon’s departure was always going to leave a significant hole in Newcastle’s squad. The England international was not flawless, but his personality, determination and willingness to take responsibility made him an important figure within Howe’s team.
With Tonali and Guimaraes also no longer around, Newcastle need players capable of stepping into leadership roles.
Fernandez-Pardo could eventually fill Gordon’s attacking role, but Nico Gonzalez may have the qualities required to become the team’s new midfield leader.
Gordon assumed greater responsibility after Alexander Isak’s transfer to Liverpool, attempting to become Newcastle’s primary attacking figure. Although his campaign was inconsistent at times, he still managed an impressive ten goals in 12 Champions League appearances.
Gonzalez is unlikely to provide the same level of goalscoring output, but his influence could come in a different form.
The midfielder has the potential to control games, dictate the tempo and provide stability in the centre of the pitch. If he continues developing, he could ultimately prove to be one of Newcastle’s most important signings of the summer.
Fernandez-Pardo certainly possesses enormous potential, but his Ligue 1 numbers last season — eight goals and five assists — show that he still has plenty to prove at the highest level.
Gonzalez, meanwhile, already has Premier League experience. Although his previous spell in England did not completely fulfil expectations, his time in Manchester helped him adapt to the demands of English football.
His Newcastle debut against Tottenham provided plenty of encouragement. The Spain international looked composed, technically sharp and confident in possession, producing an assured performance in the heart of the midfield.
Of course, it would be premature to make definitive judgments based on a single appearance. New signings can make spectacular debuts before struggling for consistency later in the campaign.
Nevertheless, Gonzalez’s display was difficult to ignore.
His performance suggested that Newcastle may have acquired a midfielder capable of becoming much more than simply another squad addition. He looked comfortable taking responsibility, moving the ball efficiently and helping dictate the rhythm of the match.
That could prove extremely valuable for Jaissle.
Newcastle Could Have Found Their Next Leader
Gonzalez may not provide the explosive goalscoring numbers associated with Gordon, but his influence could become just as important in a different way.
He has previously received praise from Pep Guardiola, who reportedly compared his style to a “mini Rodri.” While matching Rodri’s extraordinary level would be an enormous challenge, the comparison highlights the qualities Gonzalez can potentially bring to a midfield.
If he can develop into even a fraction of the player Rodri became, Newcastle will feel they have secured an exceptional addition.
The Magpies need experienced players who can handle pressure, influence younger teammates and consistently perform at Premier League level. Gonzalez appears to have many of those ingredients.
His journey could even follow a path similar to Gordon’s — arriving with expectations, encountering difficulties, and eventually developing into a major star on Tyneside.
Fernandez-Pardo may possess the attacking flair to become Newcastle’s next headline-maker, but Gonzalez could quietly become the player who makes the entire team function.
For a club entering a new era under Jaissle, having both players develop simultaneously could be crucial.
