The defeat was particularly frustrating because Villa showed considerable improvement compared with their opening-day performance against Brighton, when they suffered a heavy 4-0 loss. However, their lack of attacking threat remained a major concern, with the hosts failing to register a shot on target against Arsenal.
Villa’s Major Summer Exodus Continues
The latest setback comes during a period of significant change at Villa Park.
The club have already lost several important members of the squad, including former goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and attacking stars such as Morgan Rogers. Ollie Watkins has also completed his move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal in a deal reportedly worth around £51 million.
Watkins’ departure represents a particularly significant blow. The England international became Aston Villa’s all-time leading Premier League goalscorer, scoring 91 league goals and 108 in all competitions during his six-year spell at the club.
His exit has left Emery with the difficult task of rebuilding his attack while simultaneously integrating several new players into the squad.
Arsenal Defeat Highlights Villa’s Problems
Against Arsenal, Villa looked more organised defensively but struggled to create meaningful opportunities.
Arsenal controlled large periods of possession and eventually found the breakthrough when Saka finished a well-worked attacking move in the 59th minute.
Despite the defeat, Emery believes there were positive signs from his reshaped squad. New arrivals have been brought in as part of an extensive rebuilding programme, with the manager attempting to create a competitive team after the departures of several key players.
The challenge, however, is becoming increasingly urgent with the transfer window approaching its conclusion.
Emery Still Has Work to Do
Aston Villa have responded to the departures by bringing in several new faces, including Nicolas Jackson and Leon Goretzka.
Jackson started against Arsenal and showed encouraging signs, while goalkeeper Zion Suzuki also made his first start for the club.
Villa are also continuing to work on additional deals as Emery attempts to complete his squad before the deadline.
The manager has previously admitted that the transfer window has disrupted Villa’s preparations, but he remains confident that the team can improve once the new players have had more time to settle.

The club’s next league fixture against Hull City could therefore be extremely important. Emery will be hoping his revamped squad can finally produce the attacking quality required to secure their first points of the campaign.
Villa’s rebuild is clearly still underway, but the pressure is already mounting for Emery to make the new-look squad competitive.
