Tottenham Hotspur endured a miserable start to their Premier League campaign as they were comprehensively beaten by Brentford in a performance that raised serious concerns about what could lie ahead for Spurs this season.
Tottenham were outplayed by their London rivals for large periods of the match, with the defeat immediately putting the spotlight on several players who failed to perform at the required level. The result will also fuel fears that Roberto De Zerbi could face a difficult task turning his expensively assembled squad into a competitive side.

However, one of the biggest talking points surrounded Tottenham’s £100 million record signing, Sandro Tonali. The Italian midfielder was expected to bring composure, experience and authority to Spurs’ midfield, but he struggled to influence the contest as Brentford dominated proceedings.
Tonali was reportedly “utterly outshone and overpowered” by Brentford’s record signing Mamadou Sangare, who appeared far more influential in the midfield battle. The Tottenham midfielder managed just one defensive contribution and won only two of his four ground duels, underlining how difficult he found the game.
There were already questions about whether Tottenham had paid too much for Tonali when they committed such a huge fee to secure his services. Unfortunately for Spurs, his opening-day performance is unlikely to silence those doubts.
The concern is even greater because Tonali is not an inexperienced youngster being introduced to Premier League football. He arrived as a proven international and Tottenham’s marquee signing, with the club paying a premium price for his ability to provide leadership, quality and control in important matches.
That is precisely why his performance against Brentford will be viewed so critically. With Tottenham struggling to gain control of the game, Tonali was expected to step forward and provide the presence required to change the momentum. Instead, he struggled to impose himself and was largely unable to influence the contest.
Being outperformed by Sangare, whose transfer fee was significantly lower, only added to the frustration surrounding Tonali’s display. The £100 million midfielder needed to win important battles, dictate the tempo and give Tottenham greater authority in the middle of the pitch. He was unable to do so consistently.
Of course, one poor performance should not be enough to judge an entire season or define Tonali’s Tottenham career. There will be plenty of opportunities for him to demonstrate why the club invested so heavily in his services.
But the manner of this particular performance will undoubtedly worry Spurs supporters. Tottenham did not spend such a huge amount on Tonali simply to have him disappear during difficult matches. They brought him in to be one of the players who could make the difference when the pressure was at its highest.
After such a disappointing opening day, Tonali will need to respond quickly. Tottenham have invested heavily in their squad, and their record signing must begin showing the leadership, quality and influence expected from a player who arrived with such a massive price tag.
