Tottenham Hotspur’s difficult start to the new Premier League season continued in embarrassing fashion as they suffered a 3-0 defeat away to Brentford on Saturday.
The campaign was supposed to signal a fresh beginning for Spurs, particularly after a summer of significant spending and numerous new arrivals under Roberto De Zerbi. Instead, Tottenham produced a performance that raised more questions than answers.
The Lilywhites were particularly poor during the first half, prompting De Zerbi to make a double substitution at the interval. Jamie O’Hara was clearly unimpressed with what he had witnessed and made his frustrations known.
What did Jamie O’Hara demand at half-time?
There was little for Tottenham supporters to celebrate at the Gtech Community Stadium, with the overall performance leaving those connected with the club deeply frustrated.
Lucas Bergvall and Conor Gallagher were both withdrawn at half-time after struggling to impose themselves in midfield. Between them, they lost four duels during the opening 45 minutes and appeared vulnerable in the centre of the pitch.
O’Hara was particularly critical of Bergvall, while also turning his attention towards Richarlison following the striker’s disappointing display.
The former Tottenham midfielder posted on X: “Can’t believe I’m on air having to watch this guff. Get Richarlison off now. Bergvall can’t play centre midfield. What is going on?”
However, De Zerbi opted against taking O’Hara’s advice immediately, leaving Richarlison on the pitch after the break.
O’Hara may have had a point about Richarlison
The talkSPORT pundit had called for Richarlison to be substituted at half-time, but the Brazilian remained on the field until the 68th minute.
His numbers offered little evidence that he was making a significant impact.
Richarlison managed just 22 touches and completed only 11 passes during his 68 minutes on the pitch. Even more concerning was his failure to register a shot or create a single chance for his teammates.
He also failed to touch the ball inside Brentford’s penalty area and won just 33 per cent of his attempted duels.
Dominic Solanke eventually replaced him, although the change came considerably later than O’Hara had wanted.
Given how ineffective Richarlison looked, Spurs may well have benefited from making the substitution sooner.
On this occasion, O’Hara’s criticism of the Brazilian could prove difficult to argue against.
