adminTottenham Hotspur have announced the passing of former winger Terry Dyson at the age of 91.
Dyson made more than 200 appearances for the club and was a vital member of the legendary double-winning squad of 1960/61, when Tottenham became only the third team in English football history to secure both the First Division title and the FA Cup in the same season.
He contributed 17 goals across those two campaigns, including a strike in the 2–0 FA Cup final victory over Leicester City.
In an official statement, Spurs expressed their deep sorrow:
“The club is extremely saddened to learn of the passing of our former player, Terry Dyson, at the age of 91. Terry was a key part of our double-winning side in 1961, scoring in the FA Cup Final. He also scored twice in the 1963 European Cup Winners’ Cup Final. He made 209 appearances in all competitions, scoring 55 goals. Our deepest condolences are with Terry’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time.”
Known by Spurs as a “5ft 3in pocket dynamo,” Dyson was first noticed while playing for the army during his national service in 1954.
He began his career with his hometown non-league side Scarborough before earning a move to the capital.
Dyson joined Tottenham in 1955 and remained at the club for a decade, adding the 1962/63 European Cup Winners’ Cup to his list of honours. His two goals in the 5–1 final win over Atlético Madrid made Spurs the first British club to claim a European trophy.
During his time in north London, he also achieved a derby milestone that still stands unmatched: in August 1961, he scored a hat-trick against Arsenal in a 4–3 victory, becoming the first—and to date, only—Spurs player to do so in the fixture.
After leaving Tottenham in 1965, Dyson went on to play for fellow London side Fulham, followed by spells at Colchester United and Guildford City.
Following his retirement, he worked as a referee observer for the Premier Academy League, a role that brought him back to Spurs regularly at their former training ground in Mill Hill.
