The 22-year-old has impressed during his time in Glasgow and has drawn significant interest from several top European clubs, including leading Premier League sides.
Spurs are the latest to enter the chase, as manager Roberto De Zerbi pushes ahead with an ambitious recruitment drive.
As mentioned on the most recent Transfer Insider podcast, Tottenham’s late interest has raised some eyebrows, though it remains a genuine possibility.
This follows Spurs’ hefty £185million outlay on Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali from West Ham and Newcastle respectively earlier in the window.
Still, De Zerbi appears keen to strengthen his midfield further, particularly with speculation that some current squad members could be moved on.
Will Tottenham launch a bid for Engels?
Football Insider reported in April that Engels is open to leaving Celtic this summer, with several European clubs monitoring his situation.
Although Spurs have entered the race later than some rivals, their demonstrated willingness to spend big could make a deal feasible.
While the club’s midfield business was thought to be complete, possible departures might push them back into the market—with Engels now firmly on their radar.
On the Transfer Insider podcast, it was noted: “Celtic will find it tough to keep him beyond this summer, even after turning down a January bid. With more time to plan ahead now, I’d expect Engels to be tempted by a Premier League move.
“For Tottenham, their interest is somewhat unexpected, given they’ve already added Tonali and Fernandes. Whether they see Engels as another addition remains unclear, but they’re clearly not done in the market yet.”
Who else is chasing Engels?
Despite Spurs’ newfound interest, they face stiff competition from both Premier League rivals and clubs abroad.
The Belgian international has caught the attention of Bundesliga sides like Borussia Dortmund, as well as clubs in Serie A and La Liga.
Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on 17 July that Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, and Fulham are all preparing moves to bring Engels south of the border.
Celtic rejected a £25million offer in January, but they are expected to be more receptive to bids this summer—putting suitors on high alert.
Forest, who made that mid-season approach, could revive their interest, while Palace and Fulham are also keen to apply pressure in the race for his signature.
