“That is unacceptable in football,  the Ref is completely wrong here” — Thierry Henry Reacts to France Collapse amid Malo Gusto penalty decision

“This Is a Disgrace… A Complete Disgrace” — Thierry Henry Reacts to France Collapse amid Malo Gusto penalty decision

Thierry Henry has strongly criticised the controversial penalty awarded against France involving Malo Gusto, insisting the officials made a costly mistake.

🗣️ Thierry Henry:

“I genuinely don’t understand how that was given as a penalty. If challenges like that are considered fouls, defenders may as well stop trying to win the ball. In my opinion, the referee got the decision wrong, and VAR missed a clear opportunity to step in and correct it.”

“It raises an important question about the purpose of VAR. If obvious and match-defining incidents are still being overlooked, then what is it there for? This isn’t just another domestic fixture—it’s the World Cup, where a single decision can alter the fate of an entire nation.”

“My heart goes out to the players because they dedicate years of hard work to reaching this stage, only for a controversial refereeing call to overshadow the football itself. That’s incredibly disappointing.”

“The standard of officiating has to improve. At this level, consistency should be the bare minimum. Players are expected to perform at the highest standard every game, and referees should be held to that same expectation when making crucial decisions.”

“I believe France deserved better from the officials. People may have different opinions, but when a decision of this importance changes the direction of a World Cup match, both the referee and VAR must be accountable. Quite simply, it wasn’t good enough.”
