Coventry City’s Pursuit of Carl Rushworth Hits Another Snag

The ongoing saga between Coventry City and Brighton & Hove Albion over goalkeeper Carl Rushworth has taken yet another turn, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

The Sky Blues have long admired the 25-year-old shot-stopper, especially after his impressive loan spell at the CBS Arena last season, where he became a fan favourite and played a pivotal role in their promotion-winning campaign.

Manager Frank Lampard has been vocal in his praise for Rushworth, describing him as a “low-maintenance, high-class professional” with the potential to reach the very top. “He’s got the talent to play for his country, without a doubt,” Lampard added.

Why Rushworth Fits the Bill

Coventry are in urgent need of a permanent number one, and re-signing Rushworth seems like a logical move. He’s already familiar with the club, the fans, and the system, and his record speaks for itself—17 clean sheets last season helped fire the team to the Championship title.

The Financial Hurdle

However, money remains a major sticking point. Coventry have already seen two bids—the latest exceeding £20 million—turned down by Brighton. To land Rushworth, they would need to more than double their current transfer record, which stands at £7.7 million for Haji Wright.

High Praise and Strong Stats

Brighton-focused journalist Andrew James hailed Rushworth’s performances as “absolutely sensational” last term, and the numbers back that up. He conceded just 45 league goals all season, boasted a 73.2% save percentage (third-best in the division), and led the Championship with 17 clean sheets. He also topped the league in goals prevented (6.7), underlining his influence between the sticks.

Alternative Targets and Complications

Lampard’s side have also been linked with Everton’s Mark Travers, though the 27-year-old comes with risks—he’s made only 24 Premier League appearances to date. If Coventry succeed in landing Rushworth, it could scupper Everton’s own plans to move for the Brighton keeper.

Brighton Playing Hardball

Despite having Bart Verbruggen—who impressed for the Netherlands at the World Cup—as their undisputed first-choice, Brighton are in no mood to let Rushworth go cheaply. The Englishman is yet to prove himself at Premier League level, and with limited opportunities at the Amex, a return to Coventry would make sense for all parties—provided the Sky Blues aren’t forced into paying over the odds.

Sheth reports that while discussions between the two clubs are still active, finalising an agreement remains difficult. Coventry are keen to get a deal over the line, but Brighton’s firm stance is proving a significant obstacle.
