Matt Bloomfield Breaks Silence Following Oxford United Exit

Matt Bloomfield has spoken out for the first time since being dismissed as Oxford United’s head coach last week, with the club swiftly naming Aaron Ramsey as his successor.

Bloomfield’s departure came nearly two months after the U’s Championship relegation was confirmed—despite a late-season improvement in results. The timing of the decision caught supporters, analysts, and even club employees off guard, prompting CEO Tim Williams and head of football operations Ed Waldron to address the reasoning behind it in a press briefing last week.

Oxford moved quickly to bring in former Arsenal and Premier League midfielder Aaron Ramsey, handing him his first permanent managerial role.

Bloomfield had only taken over in January, replacing Gary Rowett—who was sacked just before Christmas—and managed to steady the ship. Under his watch, Oxford sat 14th in the form table from that point onward.

In a statement released through the League Managers Association, the ex-United boss reflected on his tenure:

“It has been an honour to serve as head coach at Oxford United. I want to thank the fans for their unwavering support and dedication throughout my time at this wonderful club.

“Whether it was families waiting by my car for a chat, the thoughtful gifts I received at season’s end, or young supporters queuing for photos after matches, I have been deeply touched by the warmth and kindness shown to me and my family since arriving in Oxford.

“The reception you gave the players after our final home game against Sheffield Wednesday was truly special—and it’s a memory I’ll always treasure.

“Although we couldn’t overturn the points gap we inherited, I’m incredibly proud of the players and coaching staff for the relentless effort we put into turning things around. The squad gave everything, and I truly believe that with more time, the outcome could have been different.

“Naturally, I’m disappointed not to see this project through. I was genuinely excited to continue building and implementing our shared vision to evolve the playing style and push the club forward.

“I’d also like to thank the Owner, the Board, and Ed Waldron for giving me the chance to work at such a great club. I wish everyone connected with Oxford United the very best for the future—and I hope our paths cross again someday.”
