Club captain Cristian Romero has been strongly linked with a summer exit from north London, with concerns over the club’s perceived lack of ambition after two straight 17th-place finishes.
Spurs have responded by spending heavily, bringing in two new centre-backs to join Micky Van de Ven, Kevin Danso, and Romero. Yet it has now emerged that De Zerbi and Spurs’ hierarchy are prepared to let Romero go—despite him signing a new contract just last summer.

Several top European sides, including Atlético Madrid, are said to be monitoring the 28-year-old, and Spurs won’t block his path if a suitable bid arrives.

At his best, Romero ranks among the Premier League’s finest defenders. But as last season showed, he also has clear weaknesses—particularly his discipline.
With De Zerbi aiming to build a new system with his own players, anyone unwilling to stay or likely to cause disruption should be moved on—and Romero fits that description.
His World Cup displays are also likely to boost interest, and with Spurs ready to do business, this deal could gather pace quickly once the tournament ends.
