Hamilton hosts the B.C. Lions (3-1) on Sunday, and a loss would be their fifth straight — the worst start since their 2017 season, when eight straight L’s cost Kent Austin his job.
And yet … since 2013, they have missed the playoffs just once, played in six East Division finals, and four Grey Cups.
They’re bad, yet good. Or perhaps, more accurately, their record is bad, but the team is good.
The Lions certainly think so.
This is the third week in a row that B.C. has played a winless team — Winnipeg and Edmonton are both still seeking their first W of the season at 0-4 — and if a few plays hadn’t gone their way, it would be the Lions at the bottom of the West.
Last week, Sean Whyte’s final-play field goal sunk the Elks 24-21. The week before, he kicked one with 2:48 left to edge the Bombers. And during their home opener, Calgary looked poised to score the go-ahead touchdown with three minutes left, but fumbled at the B.C. 28-yard line. Whyte hit another with 37 seconds left for the final points in a 26-17 win.
