Shortly before midnight on July 20, 16-year-old Julio Joseph, a resident of Pomona, Essequibo Coast, was killed when a car driven by 20-year-old Gavinash Narine crashed into a wall.
According to the Guyana Police Force, Narine informed investigators that he was traveling south on the Fairfield public road on the Essequibo Coast at approximately 80 kilometers per hour when he noticed a cow on the road.
He veered left to avoid colliding with the animal and lost control of the vehicle.
Video footage of the accident showed the car swerving in the road before crashing into a wall and killing Joseph, who was a front seat passenger, along with at least one dog.
Narine was taken to the Suddie Public Hospital in a semi-conscious state where he was treated for a fractured arm and laceration to the head.
Meanwhile, Guyana’s Opposition leader has expressed concern about the number of accidents on the nation’s roadways.

Aubrey Norton said the statistics are alarming and require urgent attention.
“This carnage has engulfed all our highways and all types of road users and vehicles: from pedestrians and motorcycles to cars, buses, and trucks. The government’s response to date has not inspired any public confidence. This is a national crisis that requires urgent and robust government responses,” Norton said in a statement on Friday.
Norton called on the government to conduct an audit to determine what needs to be done to ensure the roadways are safe for both drivers and pedestrians.
