A 21-year-old university student, Nikos Hatzipavlou, was found dead on the Aegean island of Kalymnos a week after being reported missing. Initially suspected to be a murder, authorities have now confirmed he died from a fall. A coroner announced on Tuesday that Hatzipavlou fell from a height and suffered severe injuries that led to his death. However, the case puzzled investigators, as his body was discovered in an area already searched by police, and his abandoned bicycle was found nearby, focusing search efforts there.
The condition of Hatzipavlou’s body initially raised suspicions. He had bruises and injuries, and the area where he was found is known for drug activity, leading authorities to consider foul play. However, the coroner’s findings indicate a different and more unsettling truth. Rather than dying immediately, Hatzipavlou is believed to have endured prolonged suffering after the fall, possibly over hours or even days. Additionally, the coroner suggested that recent heavy rains might have moved his body to the location where it was ultimately found.
Hatzipavlou was a student at the National Technical University of Athens. At the time of the incident, he was visiting Kalymnos to spend time with his mother, who works there as a schoolteacher.
