South Carolina got a transfer-portal surprise on Thursday.
While the Gamecocks were in the middle of their seventh practice of the spring, On3 Sports’ Hayes Fawcett reported that edge rusher Wendell Gregory plans to enter the transfer portal.
Gregory commented on the report, saying: “Gods timing.”
The timing is odd. South Carolina still has a half-dozen spring practices remaining as well as the Garnet & Black Spring Game on April 18. And the transfer portal doesn’t even open until April 16. So Gregory could have gone through all of spring ball and then entered the portal if he wanted.
Instead, he made his intentions known on Thursday.
A former four-star recruit from Georgia, Gregory played in two games last year as a true freshman. The 6-foot-3, 245-pounder played linebacker in high school but was moved to edge when he got to South Carolina.
Even as it loses Kyle Kennard, the South Carolina EDGE room is deep. Back is sophomore Dylan Stewart along with upper classmen Bryan Thomas Jr., Desmond Umeozulu and Jatius Geer.
