MARLBOROUGH — 3 people confirmed dead many injured after a school bus with 31 students on board collided with a car on Route 101 (Main Street) Wednesday morning, police said.
Asianah Gostyla, 18, of Marlborough was driving east on Route 101 in a 2019 Hyundai Elantra when her car drifted into the westbound lane, said Marlborough Chief Police Zachary Byam.
Gostyla’s vehicle, which had one passenger, a juvenile, collided with the 2013 school bus belonging to First Student, he said.
The bus, driven by Toby Sheehan, 48, of Marlborough, was traveling west on Route 101. Both drivers “recognized the issue and tried to take evasive action” but ultimately collided, according to Byam.
“It was an angled collision, which helped spare some more serious injuries,” he said. “It could have been a whole lot worse.”
The crash was reported at about 7:45 a.m., and closed part of Route 101 for more than an hour. School officials and representatives from First Student worked to have students transferred to another bus while the crash was being investigated, according to a news release from police Wednesday afternoon.
At the time of the collision, there were 31 students on the bus headed to Marlborough School and Keene High School, the release noted.
The juvenile passenger in the Hyundai Elantra was transported to Cheshire Medical Center for further evaluation, and the remaining occupants of both vehicles were evaluated at the scene, police said.
Police said a citation was issued to Gostyla for crossing the center line. Neither speed nor impairment were suspected contributing factors to the accident, according to the news release.
Anyone with additional information about the crash is asked to call Marlborough police at 603-876-3311.
