Providence College men’s basketball head coach Kim English is making pivotal decisions regarding key players as he aims to revitalize the program following a challenging 2024–25 season. The Friars concluded the season with a 12–20 record, marking only the second time in program history they have reached 20 losses. English described the season as “pitiful” and “embarrassing,” taking full responsibility and emphasizing the need for significant changes.
In the wake of the season’s end, English is evaluating the future of several players. Notably, center Rafael Essandoko, who transferred from Saint Joseph’s, averaged 4.3 points and 3.9 rebounds over 22 games but did not participate in the final two games of the season. These absences were decisions made by English, indicating a possible shift in the team’s direction.
Additionally, players DeLaurier and Bonke, who primarily served as reserves, are under consideration for their future roles. DeLaurier, who redshirted the previous season due to injury, and Bonke, who joined mid-season from an Arizona junior college, are both being assessed during offseason workouts to determine their fit in the team’s evolving strategy.
Despite the roster changes, English has demonstrated a strong commitment to player retention. He successfully retained key players like Devin Carter and Garwey Dual, a highly regarded high school recruit, during his tenure. However, the departure of standout forward Bryce Hopkins to the transfer portal highlights the challenges of maintaining a cohesive roster in the current college basketball landscape.
Looking ahead, English is focused on rebuilding the team’s competitiveness through strategic recruiting and development. The upcoming offseason will be crucial as he seeks to implement changes that align with his vision for the program’s future.
