RCMP deploying ‘extensive resources’ to find hiker who failed to return from BC Rockies trip
Mounties in BC are searching for a hiker who failed to return from a camping trip in the province’s Rocky Mountains wilderness.
Sam Benastick was reported missing on Oct. 19.
Police said he last spoke with his family on Oct. 8, a day after beginning his hike.
The “avid” hiker had set off for a trip in Redfern-Keily Park, police said, and was supposed to be home by Oct. 17.
Police said he had a tarp and a black Osprey backpack with red strings.
They added that “extensive resources” have already been deployed to find Benastick, including police dogs.
According to BC Parks literature, Redfern-Keily Park features “some of the most scenic landscapes in the Northern Rocky Mountains.”
But visitors are also urged to undertake avalanche training and be prepared for “any weather” while there.
Wildlife is “abundant” in the wilderness area, BC Parks added.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Northern Rockies RCMP at 250-774-2700.
