Former Auburn Football Coach of the Year Tommy Tuberville Discusses the Divisive Subject of Transgender Athletes in Female Sports During the 2024 Offseason
A few things about Tommy Tuberville, formerly of Ole Miss and Auburn football, and his head coaching career are true. For the most part, he was a winner, posting a 159-99 record in his 21 years as an FBS head coach, winning the SEC Western Division six times and the AAC once, and leading Auburn football to a sparkling 13-0 record in 2004. Also true is that Tuberville’s career as a frontman was marred by horror stories, mainly when it came to him leaving or joining a new school. Nevertheless, seeing Tuberville critical of or praising college coaches on Twitter is weird.
On Tuesday, Tuberville voiced his opinion on a contentious issue, applauding Liberty Panthers High School (Washington) track coaches Brad Anderson and Jason Keniston for their stance on biological males competing against women. The debate over gender ideology, both at the high school and college level, continues to be a hot topic.
Former Auburn football head coach Tommy Tuberville does not shy away from discussing political issues in sports. On Tuesday, Mallory Sailer of the Independent Women’s Forum published an article about a biological male, identifying as transgender, winning the girls’ 400-meter in-state competition in Washington, ultimately resulting in a state championship for their team. Competing high school coach Jason Keniston said, “How can anyone think this is fair, regardless of the politics of our world and our country?”
We need more coaches like Brad Anderson and Jason Keniston to stand up for female athletes.
Parents, coaches, and educators should be UNITED on this.
Tuberville, formerly of Auburn football and now the Senator of Alabama, chimed in on the matter via Twitter, saying, “We need more coaches like Brad Anderson and Jason Keniston to stand up for female athletes. Parents, coaches, and educators should be UNITED on this. Men shouldn’t be allowed to play in women’s sports. Period.” The longtime Auburn football frontman has routinely used his Twitter account to discuss political matters in sports. He has long pushed against President Joe Biden’s legislation to expand protections for LGBTQ+ students through Title IX. He also introduced the Protecting Athletes, Schools, and Sports (PASS) Act of 2023 to regulate name, image, and likeness (NIL).
