Adams arrived in New York just last week, but he’s already making moves.
The New York Jets’ loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday left fans with plenty of questions, especially about the future of wide receiver Mike Williams. However, Davante Adams, the Jets’ newest addition, quickly shut down trade rumors, insisting that Williams is staying put.
Speculation about Williams’ future began the moment the Jets signed Adams last Tuesday. The 11-season veteran reunited with his former Green Bay Packers teammate, quarterback Aaron Rodgers, sparking concerns about Williams’ role on the team.
Adams’ arrival complicated things for Williams, as the Jets already have Allen Lazard and Garrett Wilson locked in as starting receivers. With Williams on a one-year contract, many believed the young wideout would be traded before the NFL’s November 5 deadline.
As analysts debated possible trade destinations for Williams, Adams made it clear that he joined the Jets to strengthen the receiving corps-and that includes Williams.
Adams stands behind Williams
In a recent conversation with Kay Adams on her Up & Adams podcast, Davante addressed the swirling rumors surrounding the Jets’ receivers following his arrival. Kay first asked about his relationship with Garrett Wilson, who has also been the subject of speculation regarding his future with the team.
“I believe he [Wilson] wants to keep balling out here and build something special with this team,” Davante said confidently.
When asked about Williams, Adams emphasized his commitment to helping the entire group develop. “I just want to continue to build. Me, him [Wilson], Mike [Williams], Lazard-we’ve got a really good room, so there are a lot of opportunities.”
Where could Williams land?
Despite Adams’ intentions, the Jets’ front office, led by owner Woody Johnson, will ultimately decide Williams’ fate. Reports suggest that the team has held trade discussions with both the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Steelers, still seeking a wide receiver to bolster quarterback Russell Wilson’s arsenal, are actively exploring their options. Meanwhile, the Chargers are interested in bringing Williams back to their roster. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have also expressed interest in Williams after losing Chris Godwin for the season.
