Clovis North High School senior athlete McKay Madsen announced his commitment to Brigham Young University (BYU) on national television during the Navy All-American game. The four-star recruit, highly sought after for his athletic talent, chose BYU over other top programs, including UCLA and Oregon.
Madsen revealed that his decision came down to the final moments, particularly between BYU and Oregon. “Honestly, it came down to the wire between BYU and Oregon,” Madsen said. “I got that offer from BYU last spring from both coaches—running backs coach Harvey Unga and linebackers coach Justin Ena. So they wanted me for both positions, and that value was very enticing.” This dual interest from the coaching staff highlighted Madsen’s versatility and made BYU’s offer especially appealing.
Coming from a family deeply connected to BYU, Madsen’s decision reflects more than just athletic aspirations. His brother and sister are current students at BYU, while his mother and grandparents are alumni. This strong family tradition played a significant role in influencing his choice. “As a family, we’re very familiar with it,” Madsen shared. “It’s all I could think about. My heart was telling me, and I couldn’t deny it. So, it solidified my decision—BYU was home.”
Standing at six feet two inches tall, Madsen has excelled as a linebacker, showcasing skills that have drawn attention from multiple collegiate programs. However, his path to BYU will take a unique route. Before starting his college football career, Madsen plans to serve a two-year mission, a common practice among many BYU athletes who prioritize their faith. Following his mission, Madsen will begin his education and football journey with the Cougars in 2027.
Madsen’s commitment to BYU not only strengthens the program’s future but also continues his family’s legacy at the university. His decision highlights the combination of athletic opportunity, familial connection, and personal conviction that made BYU the clear choice. Fans of BYU football will undoubtedly anticipate his arrival in Provo, where he is expected to make an impact both on and off the field.
As he prepares for his mission and eventual college career, Madsen’s story reflects the deep personal values and determination that have defined his journey. His commitment is a significant win for BYU, reinforcing the program’s ability to attract top-tier talent while fostering a strong sense of community and tradition.
